WTF is a ‘Zero-Knowledge Proof’ & Why Does It Matter? 🤔

On today’s list of web3 terms you should know, but are too afraid to ask about at this point: zero-knowledge proofs — a technique that allows someone to prove the ownership or validity of a piece of information, without revealing the information itself. But how do they apply to web3?

While zero-knowledge proofs (or ZKPs for short) have been around for a while, their applications on the blockchain have emerged more recently — solving privacy + scalability issues and unlocking powerful web3 use cases like:

• Private transactions: ZKPs give users privacy on the blockchain — publishing proof of the transaction on the chain, but leaving out the amount & transacting parties from the public record.

• Blockchain scalability: zkEVMs take some of the work that happens on the blockchain, do the computation off-chain, & create a proof to show that everything was done according to the EVM’s rules.

• Decentralized identity: ZKPs can be used to create decentralized identities that verify a user as a person, without revealing any sensitive information about them — giving users ownership over their data.
