The Ethereum Merge Is Here: What's Next For web3 Devs?

Learn How to Build A MAYC Clone (In Less Than 60 Minutes)

THE MERGE | The Day Has Finally Arrived

Today, one of the most significant events in blockchain history took place.

The Ethereum network has officially upgraded from Proof of Work to Proof of Stake.

Cool. What does that actually mean?

Quicker transactions, reduced energy usage, and one large step towards scalability.

Sick. How is this relevant to devs?

The Merge was designed to minimally impact the developer ecosystem. That said, there will be minor changes to:

  • Block structure

  • Slot/block timing

  • Opcode changes

  • Sources of on-chain randomness

  • Concepts of safe head and finalized blocks

For more details including the difference between Proof of Work and Proof of Stake, check out thirdweb's full thread here. Also, don't miss the Ethereum Foundation's Guide on the impact to Ethereum's application layer and comprehensive breakdowns on things like Beacon Chains.
